Echoes from Cañon
Our Core Beliefs
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action
Last week Lindsay Cook, a Mountain View Core Knowledge School 2nd grade instructional aide, saved the life of a student. She did so by performing the Heimlich Maneuver on a child who was choking on a water bottle cap. I'm told Lindsay then simply went on with her work as normal, performing all the important tasks she does on a daily basis. Lindsay, there is absolutely no better way to exhibit our first core belief more than to take action, as you did, when it was most needed for a child. Thank you!
Last Thursday the Cañon City High School Tiger Ladies and Encore show choirs competed in the Colorado State Show Choir Championships in Colorado Springs. Incredibly, both made it to the final round of three, with Tiger Ladies taking 3rd place in the state and Encore capturing the state championship trophy! Congratulations to both groups. I know how long and hard you have worked. Congratulations also to Mr. Todd Albrecht and his entire support crew. Yes, the work you do in our schools truly does have a tremendous impact on our children!

Last week, along with our partners from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Cañon City High School students had the opportunity to participate in a College Night where they got to learn from soon to be UCCS graduates about what it takes to be successful in higher education. I want to thank Dr. Patty Witkowski for arranging this future-focused activity for our students.
Our Future Focus
On Monday, April 15th the Cañon City Education Support Personnel Association (CCESPA) and district representatives conducted an Interest-Based Solutions process to negotiate chnges to master agreement language. Topics discussed included classified work agreements related to recent calendar changes, the number of required annual work days, and work assignments for classified staff, as well as generally cleaning up contract language. This process will continue in early May when discussions shift to employee compensation and benefits.
On Wednesday I had the pleasure of presenting information to Senator Cory Gardner, along with Cañon City High School Principal Bill Summers, about the progress we're making at CCHS in becoming a career pathways high school. Topics included the career pathways curriculum we have created, our recently instituted one-to-one Chromebook program, our intern and apprentice program, the work we're doing around our P-TECH program, and the amazing Early College partnership we have with Pueblo Community College. Senator Gardner was in town on a follow-up visit to TechStart, and we were invited to present.
Speaking of interns and apprentices, this Thursday the Cañon City High School PaICE program will host its annual job fair in the Tiger Dome. At this event, nearly 100 local employers will interview hundreds of high school students who are seeking intern/apprentice opportunties during the 2019-20 school year.

Bond Progress
No new work has taken place on our grounds facility, as we are waiting for concrete to dry before we erect the steel building. At the CCMS construction site, footer trenches are being dug for the new 8th-grade wing/commons/life skills structure.
Last Week
On Monday we held classified agreement language negotiations. On Tuesday I worked on building evaluation reports, held a Superintendent's Advisory Council meeting, and attended a meeting where the development of an early childhood sector partnership was discussed. On Wednesday I attended a legislative advocacy meeting, had the opportunity to meet with Senator Gardner, conducted several expulsion hearings, and met with a couple of principals about their evaluations. On Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the state show choir competition in Colorado Springs. I also attended a special board work session that afternoon. On Friday I held quite a few expulsion hearings and worked one items related to principal evaluations.
This Week
On Monday I conduct two principal evaluations and will attend a board work session and meeting. On Tuesday morning I have some personal matters to attend to, as well as a monthly Instructional Leader Professional Learning Community meeting to conduct. On Wednesday we have a construction pricing meeting and then a board strategic planning session. On Thursday I'll be in Denver for an Early Childhood Leadership Commission meeting and to present with Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator Jamie Murray at a statewide Mental Health Summit. I'll hustle back to Cañon that afternoon to attend our next Civic Canopy engagement session. On Friday I'll be in Pueblo attending a Southern Superintendent's gathering and will attend the annual Pueblo Community College Hall of Fame banquet that evening.
