Echoes from Cañon
Our Core Beliefs
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action
On Monday, July 22nd district-wide key office staff participated in a back to school information sharing event. This was coordinated by Board-Superintendent Secretary Colleen Carroll and included sharing a wealth of information surrounding administrative procedures involved in preparing each building for the start of the school year.
Last week more than 30 of our educators participated in Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing Lindamood-Bell reading intervention training. To leverage our dollars, this year training was provided through a distance connection. Upon completion, a survey was administered and several participant comments that stood out included, "I think I will be able to implement a lot of what I learned in the training into my Journey's small group instruction and I'll be able to utilize the common language to support my instruction during whole-group as well." Another said, "I think the Lindamood-Bell instructional language and verbiage can be utilized across all classroom instruction. Using the sight word strategies for spelling and reading will also be beneficial."

Our Future Focus
Among many topics at this week's Superintendent Advisory Council meeting, we planned a comprehensive classroom substitute training day, discussed setting up a Memorandum Of Understanding with the Cañon City Police Department, received an election process update, and strategized special education staffing.
As a result of summer street construction by the City, access to on-site registration will be a bit challenging for parents whose children attend some of our schools.
Though roads around Washington Elementary School are being worked on, on-site registration begins on Thursday, August 1 and continues on Friday, August 2 and Monday, August 5 from 11 am to 7 pm. We want parents to know they'll be able to access the Washington parking lot and main entrance from northbound 9th Street even though 9th is closed to thru traffic.
Meanwhile, road construction near Lincoln School of Science and Technology and Cañon City Middle School is making it impossible to hold registration at those buildings. Thus, on-site registration for these schools will take place on August 1st, 2nd, and 5th at the DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING located at 101 N. 14th Street. This will take place from 11 AM to 7 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Monday the 1st, 2nd, and 5th.

Bond Progress
Work continues on our clean up of asbestos-contaminated soils from the buried pipe we discovered on the middle school construction site. The State has provided guidance and issued the appropriate permits to complete the mitigation. Unfortunately, it looks like the bill will come to right around $300,000, taking around three weeks to complete. This unexptected expense leaves us with $1.75 million in contingency reserves.
Last Week
Last week we held back to school orientation for all school office staff and administrators. Another cohort of teachers participated in a week-long Lindamood-Bell reading intervention training. We also held a board meeting and work session, during which we toured the CCMS construction site. On Tuesday we had a Social Emotional Learning program planning meeting, a weekly SAC meeting. On Wednesday and Thursday, I was in Breckenridge at the Colorado Association of Schools Executives annual conference.
This Week
This week we have our annual administrator retreat on Monday, a Superintendent Advisory Council meeting and a key personnel customer service training on Tuesday. We then have an extended all-staff gathering presentation planning session on Wednesday, a New Board Member Academy on Thursday, and Gateway to College before school planning meetings on Friday. We also have time scheduled to make suggested adjustments to our federal programs application, among a number of other administrative tasks.
