Echoes From Cañon
Our Mission and Core Beliefs
The Cañon City School District is future-focused, providing innovative educational opportunities to successfully prepare all students to meet any challenge they may face.
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action

This week I offer a shout out to our Choice Points Credit Recovery and Alternative to Expulsion Program staff member Melissa Dewey. Melissa has worked relentlessly with the Cañon City Police Department and the Cañon City Council to secure a donation of 10 bikes for the program. Melissa's goal is to increase independence and ownership of students in transporting themselves to and from school. Many of the donated bicycles are in need of repair so Choice Points teacher Chris McIntyre and community member Mike Sallie are donating personal time to upgrade them. For some students, this is the first time they have ever owned a bicycle.
Recently the USDA extended the ability for schools to offer free meals to all children under the age of 18 through the end of the school year. In Cañon City Schools, in addition to offering free meals during the school day, we're also offering them from our mobile food unit every no-school Friday through mid-November. These distributions will supply participants with meals for the entire weekend.
The locations and dates of service are as follows:
Harrison School West Parking Lot: 11:00 - 11:20 AM
Canon City High School Student Parking Lot: 11:30 - 11:50
Lincoln School Of Science and Technology Front Entrance: 12:20 - 12:40
Dates of service: 10/23/20, 11/6/20, and 11/23/20 (First day of Thanksgiving Break)

Our Future Focus

I wish to thank Cañon City Schools Health and Wellness Coordinator Brian VanIwarden for expertly and efficiently applying for Fremont County CARES Act dollars to support the safe reopening of our schools. Last week Mr. VanIwarden got notice that we received a $10,000 award for these purposes.
Testing for COVID 19 has become more convenient for Cañon City students, staff, and eligible siblings and dependants. The Pulse, our School-Based Health Center located in Canon City Middle School, offers COVID testing and quick examinations. Here are the steps to secure a test or an exam:

Applying Our Traits and Skills

Recently the Ford Motor Company agreed to allow our Vocational Automotive classes to be part of their ACE (Automotive Career Exploration) program. This will provide an additional training partner in addition to Subaru-University, empowering our students to diversify their knowledge and career potential. Mr. Duston says this new program will offer an additional 60 hours of Ford specific training and approximately 30 separate certification opportunities.
I also want to highlight the innovative spirit of the Lincoln School of Science and Technology staff. This fall, in an effort to speed up the process of students transitioning from recess, they designed and built a number of handwashing stations that they have located right on the playground. What a great idea!

Looking Ahead
In the coming weeks, the district will submit annual federal programs applications revisions, update its annual Unified Improvement Plan for improving academic outcomes, further develop social-emotional supports for middle and high school students through Youth Connections grant work, and continue establishing a collaborative relationship with the RE-2 and RE-3 school districts in an effort to secure some Colorado RISE Grant funding.
