Echoes from Cañon
Examples of Excellence
Congratulations are due Director of Human Resources Misty Manchester for being appointed to the CEBT (Colorado Employers Benefit Trust) Board. She'll officially take her seat at the summer conference on July 17th. This is great news for Cañon City Schools as Misty will be able to represent our employee interests when it comes to the provision of health benefits.
On a similar note, Director of Technology Shaun Kohl was just reappointed to the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) CALET (Colorado Association of Leaders in Educational Technology) board of directors. Mr. Kohl has already been serving in this capacity for the past two years and doing so gives him access to the best educational technology minds in the state. This has been extremely important as we have geared up for our one-to-one Chromebook implementation.
Though not school district related, I can't let this week go by without offering a gigantic thank you to our local firefighters for the incredibly quick and efficient response they made to the Quarry and Twin fires that lit up late Saturday afternoon. Their communication was outstanding and the way they brought them to a quick resolution no doubt saved the community lots of headaches. Many brave, hardworking young men and women are on the front lines of this important work all over Colorado, and they certainly deserve all of our appreciation.

The Focus of Our Work
This summer our finance department has been hard at work setting up payroll services through our online Infinite Visions platform. This allows CCSD employees to access their contracts or work agreements, direct deposit requests and forms, W2 and tax documents, and leave and vacation requests directly online. Setup has been a gigantic task but in the long run, CCSD will save quite a bit by not having to process all these items on paper, and employees will have much easier access to their information. I want to thank Keri Peterson, Char Isgar, Jody Brixey, Robin Pearson, and Robin Roberts for their effort.
During the past year, Harrison School Counselor Sandra Seaney coordinated a project to outline ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan) curriculum for the district's grade 6-8 students. She recently submitted this work to the district office and Assistant Superintendent Adam Hartman and I will soon be meeting with her to plan for its implementation.

Override Progress
In preparation for our high school one-to-one Chromebook implementation, the CCSD technology department has been ordering devices, adjusting the wireless network, working on off-network device connection issues, and mounting classroom display devices. Additionally, Cañon City High School staff have continued taking online professional development courses, and are planning ways to effectively blend instructional delivery through the use of devices. Our plan is to issue a Chromebook to each grade 9-12 student at the beginning of the school year.
Bond Progress

Last week the Cañon City School District received a favorable credit rating from the folks at Moodys, paving the way for an $8 million bond sale to secure our required cash match for the $32 million Cañon City Middle School major campus upgrade project
On July 16 and 17 some Cañon City Schools School employees will be taking tours of new and remodeled facilities in Cherry Creek, Brighton, Longmont, and Boulder. Our goal is to get a taste for what new school construction looks like prior to entering our new school design phase.
This week we also received preliminary drawings of our new district grounds shop. Our Design-Build team leaders at GE Johnson are now in the process of costing our some of the major aspects of it.

Last Week
I spent the 4th of July week on a family vacation in Charleston, South Carolina, and Indianapolis, Indiana visiting family and being worked to death on home improvement projects by my son Stefan and his wife Quinn. I'll remain on vacation through Tuesday, returning to work on July 11th.
This Week

On Wednesday I'll attend a meeting focusing on Cañon City High School instructional technology matters. I'll also attend a Communities That Care networking meeting, a final principal evaluation conference, and a community meeting updating folks on the new happenings at the Zephyr Gold Mine. On Thursday I have several routine meetings including one to sign our State Board of Education approved BEST Grant documents. I'll also meet with new Fremont County Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Darcy Cole, and attend a performance of Les Misérables in Pueblo that will feature many past and present Cañon City High School performers. On Friday I'll attend a meeting about the zoning of our Washington Elementary campus and then spend time finalizing last year's principal evaluations on the RANDA online platform.
