Echoes from Cañon
Our Mission and Core Beliefs
The Cañon City School District is future-focused, providing innovative educational opportunities to successfully prepare all students to meet any challenge they may face.
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action

Once again, the Cañon City High School Student Council held a Thanksgiving turkey and cash drive in support of Loves and Fishes.
The CCHS Automative program played a big part, accepting turkeys as donations in lieu of automotive repair work.
This year the event netted 122 birds and $1,505.11. What a great example of our first core belief, putting Maslow before Bloom!
Kudos are also due the Cañon City Rotary Club for once again donating beautiful hardcover dictionaries to every 3rd Grader in our school district. Last week Rotarians even made the rounds to our schools and delivered the books in person!

Our Future Focus
Perhaps you’ve noticed the small construction project taking place on the northwest corner of the Cañon City High School campus. Our community greenhouse is finally being assembled. This has been supported by our partners at the Green Thumb Initiative, as well has through a FIOG Committee grant, and Cañon City School District contributions.
When the structure is complete CCHS science classes will use the facility and GTI will offer after school and summer botany courses focused on student mindfulness.

Applying Our Traits and Skills

As reported several weeks ago, the Colorado Department of Education Postsecondary Workforce Readiness Team held its annual retreat right here in Cañon City.
During the session the team had the opportunity to tour Cañon City High School and the TechSTART tech industry incubator. Upon wrapping up the retreat, the CDE PWR Team shared the following comments with us.
“It was so rewarding to see our PWR programs working for students. Thank you CCHS!”
“Visiting CCHS gave our team a clear picture of the power of PWR in practice. Thanks for the inspiration.”
“I loved seeing all the ways you are helping students find their pathways and it was so touching to hear directly from the students.”
I wish to thank Bill Summers, Ande Davis, and Lisa Tedesko for making this event possible and sharing our campus with these special visitors.
Last week, the Mountain View Core Knowledge Charter School held a variety of pre-Thanksgiving events.
Students conducted a mock Macy’s thanksgiving Day parade, with balloon decorations and all! The school also held an assembly as well as a holiday music performance. Each event was well attended by parents and community!

Looking Ahead

With a limited number of days left in my 2021 calendar year contract, I’ll be taking most of Thanksgiving week off.
However, I will publish an installment of Echoes from Cañon, attend a meeting with our Human Resources Director Jamie Davis and Superintendent Designee Adam Hartman.
I'll also work on some updates required by the Colorado Department of Education related to to our ESSER III budget, and I'll attend a Fremont County Board of Health meeting where they’ll be discussing ways to mitigate the rise in COVID cases we’ve experienced in the district.

Other Voices

Last week recently sworn in Board of Education directors Todd Albrecht and Molly Merry were once again on our campuses.
In doing so, they had the opportunity to see several music performances by district programs.
Mr. Albrecht reflected on this in this message he shared with the community:
What a JOY to witness some of the most AMAZING young singers led by some of the hardest working teachers in the Cañon City Schools, the district’s elementary and middle school music teachers!
Molly and I attended two of their shows today as they toured our schools! It is so good to see the Performing Arts valued and shared so proudly by all these people!
So proud to call them ours!
Thank your all for your dedication and sharing your time and talents so freely and generously with our kids! This was above and beyond! You all make a difference!
Todd Albrecht
. . . and thanks for listening once again. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
