Echoes from Cañon
Our Core Beliefs
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action
Perhaps there is no better way to exemplify our first core belief, "we meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy," than to highlight the incredible effort our community made once again to keep our graduating class safe before their big ceremony. I wish to thank the many community members who continue to support our annual Senior Fun Fest, an activity aimed at giving each year’s graduating class a safe place to celebrate their final moments in school. It has now taken place for an incredible 31 straight years! Thank you to the many businesses and individuals who donated money, time, and resources to make this year's event a rousing a success. Our Future Focus
With summer upon us, we want to ensure parents are aware of the many great things going on to expand opportunties for our children.
The Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County began their summer program this week. This summer they'll be offering programs out of the "12th St Clubhouse" located at Canon City High School.
The Cañon City Public Library is once again operating a summer reading program. This year's theme is "A Universe of Stories" and takes place every Thursday afternoon through July 12th. The library offers online signup, or you can just stop by to do it in person, and I hear they'll be conducting weekly prizes and a culminating swim party.
Speaking of swimming, the Cañon City Recreation District is once again holding a summer swim lesson program. There will be multiple sessions and registration is open at thier website, www.ccrec.org. Lessons begin this week! If you prefer to just visit the pool on your own terms, adult lap swimming takes place each day from 12 PM to 1 PM, open swim from 1 pm to 5 pm, and evening swim lessons from 7 to 9 PM.
Finally, the Cañon City School District is once again providing free breakfast and lunch to all school-age children. This will take place through July 31st. No forms or registration is required, all you have to do is show up. Breakfast and Lunch will be served Monday through Friday at Canon City High School (1313 College Avenue) with breakfast from 8 - 9:30 AM and lunch from 11 AM- 12:30 PM. Mobile Lunch will be served Monday through Friday at Centennial (Duck) Park in Canon City from 12:15 PM - 12:40 PM, and at Pioneer Park in Florence from 11:15 AM - 11:50 AM. While kids are eating, they can even check out a book at the mobile book exchange!

Bond Progress
Late last week our Washington Elementary School construction site was fenced off and demolition began immediately on the playground. Though space will be limited during the 2019-20 school year, plenty of room will be available to meet the recess needs of students while the new building is constructed. We also held construction budgeting meetings last week, during which we revisited our alternate project lists for each school, with major consideration given to when drop-dead decision dates need to be placed on the calendar be for each item.
Last Week
Like many of you, I celebrated Memorial Day with my family on Monday. On Tuesday I caught up on office work, then traveled to the San Luis Valley to mix a little work and play as I supported some superintendent colleagues embarking on building projects of their own. While in the Valley I kept up on email, rendered a couple of expulsion decisions, worked on aligning our building evaluation rubrics to our Student Empowered Learning Framework, and began pulling together some 2018-19 school year highlights for the folks at TechSTART to publicize. On Thursday I had an important construction project budget session and a meeting with Director of Special Services Tim Renn about preschool special education services. On Friday my main focus was 2019-20 budget issues.
This Week
I began this week in Denver to attend the annual Public Education-Business Coalition Superintendent Forum. Governor Polis was the featured speaker and a panel of superintendents from around the state shared their thought on the most important topics related to public education. I made it back in Cañon City on Monday in time for our annual Administrative Office Staff Cookout, at which I consumed far more than one human being ought to be allowed to. During the rest of the week I hope to communicate to the public our next Board Member Development Academy opportunity, meet with CCHS Principal Bill Summers about budget considerations, make a monthly appearance on KRLN's Morning Line, hold a weekly Superintendent Advisory Council meeting, begin planning our late July return to school administrative retreat, make plans for publicizing our soon to open School-Based Health Center, attend a CCEOE meeting, attend a meeting about a proposed recreation center, attend a monthly HomeBiEd Board meeting, prepare for and facilitate our next Civic Canopy meeting, and hold a monthly touching base meeting with Brian Turner from SolVista. While I'm not doing those things I also plan to revise this year's Federal Programs budget, complete this year's Federal Programs application, and work a bit more on our building evaluation rubric revisions.
