Echoes from Cañon

Our Mission and Core Beliefs
The Cañon City School District is future-focused, providing innovative educational opportunities to successfully prepare all students to meet any challenge they may face.

1.  We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2.  We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3.  We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4.  We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action

PictureOur summer nutrition staff is already hard at work!
Once again, our high school students are paving the way for mental health awareness and social-emotional wellbeing!

Cañon City High School Advanced Art students recently shared their artistic talents in developing a calming coloring book called Creative Designs for Unsettled Minds.  This is designed to assist teens in addressing stress-related disorders, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD.  Tiger students researched, planned, and drew various designs that include mystical landscapes, quirky characters, Cañon City’s historic Main Street, and meditative mandalas.

The assignment actually became a Capstone project for two juniors, Tanna Mock and Kenna Vidmar, who intend to publish and sell the coloring books at CCHS and in the community.

Creative Designs for Unsettled Minds will be available to purchase at SolVista Health centers, Gateway To Success Behavioral Health Clinic, Fremont County Department of Human Services, Kindred Kids Child Advocacy Center, and in the CCHS counseling office for a discounted price.

Tanna and Kenna plan to share the proceeds with a charity of their choice.

In keeping your focus on Core Belief number one, Cañon City Schools will once again offer a robust summer food service program.

Dine-in service started at Cañon City High School on May 27th.  Each weekday, breakfast will be served there from 8 to 9:30 AM.  Lunch is served from 11 AM to 12:30 PM.  These are free to children 18 and under.

Starting June 1st, Grab and Go service began at Cañon Exploratory School (11:15 AM), Harrison School  (11:40 AM), McKinley Elementary (Noon), and Lincoln School of Science and Technology (12:25 PM).

In addition to this, the Cañon City Schools Nutrition Team is asking all families who think they may qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch services for the 2021-22 school year to fill out an application form this summer.

To see if you are eligible for Meal Benefits based on income, click on this link 20.21 School Year Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Our Nutrition Services Department has provided two user friendly options for completing the form.  You can download a printable form at  20-21 Free and Reduced Meal Application.  Just print it, fill it out, and sign it, then drop it off at the front office of your child’s school, or the District Administration Office at 101 North 14th Street.

If you are a little more comfortable with technology, you can complete a digital form online at this link: Download the fillable 20-21 Free and Reduced Meal Application.  Simply fill it out on your computer or tablet, save it, then submit it online at this link: Go here to submit the application online, directly to our Nutritional Services office

Our Future Focus

Though the 2020-21 school year just ended, CCSD is already gearing up for 2021-22 registration.

This year our process will allow some families the flexible option of completing all registration materials electronically.  For example, families who only have returning students with no major updates can complete this fully online.

Additionally, the district will provide in-person support for any family needing assistance with the registration process.  This will take place at the district administration office from July 12th through July 30th.

Of course, some students will have to register in person so they can participate in athletics, activities, and concurrent enrollment coursework. The day of support for these individuals is Wednesday, August 4th at their school site.

As registration approaches we’ll be reaching out to families and students with more information.

Applying Our Traits and Skills

Picture
Recently, Cañon City high School was selected as an honoree for the 2021 MoneyWi$er Financial Innovation Awards. This means the school will receive a $10,000 cash prize and a trophy!

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser presented this to CCHS during the virtual MoneyWi$er Awards on Wednesday, May 26th.

The MoneyWi$er Financial Innovation Awards serve as a tool for districts, schools, educators and students to elevate the importance of learning money management and financial literacy skills. MoneyWi$er educators and students lift personal finance education by sharing how personal finance education and skill have impacted their schools and community in a positive way.

CDE will soon be sending the $10,000 award funds to us, and Cañon City High School will decide how best to invest them.

The Cañon City Schools Gifted and Talented Education program is currently hosting its Summer SPLASh! program.
The Cañon City Schools Gifted and Talented Education program is in the midst of hosting its 2021 Summer SPLASh! program.

SPLASh! is designed for gifted and advanced students, allowing children to participate in enriching classes that challenge their thinking.  It is taking place on weekdays Tuesday,  June 1st through Thursday,  June 10th.

Although we usually partner with Pueblo Community College on this endeavor, even making use of their Fremont Campus, this year SPLASh! Is being be held at Harrison K-8 School.

Looking Ahead

PictureOur last Board Candidate Development Academy took place in teh summer of 2019.
As part of its future focus, the Board of Education of Cañon City Schools is holding a Board Candidate Development Academy for all interested persons. The academy will take place on Tuesday, June 8th, 2021 from 5-7 PM in the Cañon City Schools Administration Building at 101 North 14th Street.

The invites all child-focused community members interested in serving on the Board of Education to participate and learn more about the role of a board member and about the current trajectory of the school district.

Academy participants will engage with current board directors to learn about best practices in school district governance, significant actions the board has taken, the board's view of the current state of the district, how education finance works, and long-term instructional program improvement efforts currently underway.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of running in a board election.

This November two Cañon City School District Board of Education seats will be open for election.

The Colorado Association of School Boards has excellent resources available for anyone interested in seeking a school board seat.

Support a Senior Program Coordinators Kevin Marushack and Shane Thornton shared this message with program supporters:
Hello all,

The Class of 2021 had quite the graduation ceremony several weeks ago as the rain came early, the flyover timing was perfect, the clouds broke and the sun came out to shine on the Seniors.  It was all so fitting for this newest group we call Alumni.  It has been quite the year and a quarter for these Tigers and they are finally off on their way to the next great adventure in their lives.  This will be our final communication to all of you and we wanted to share just a few last things with you.

We made a big ask in February and like this community always does, it came through.  Our plan was to have a sponsor for every single senior in the Class of 2021 and that is exactly what happened.  Every graduating senior was supported by an individual, a couple, an alumni, a business or a community organization of some type.   One of the beliefs in our building is that "everybody is somebody" and it rang true once again as all of you showed up for all of them.  What adds to the depth of your kindness in participating in this is the random pairings of the project as you all signed up to support what was most likely going to be a stranger.   You willingly signed up to do good and make a difference for someone.  And that is what each of you did for each of them.

Our hope is that all of you who were shopping sponsors will soon be receiving a personalized thank you from your senior.  At senior checkout, we were pleasantly surprised as one of the seniors handed us a Thank You card for her anonymous sponsor.  As for how the random draw went, she never knew who her sponsor was but yet still brought a card.  We'll consider this a thank you to all of the anonymous sponsors and those that donated.  The card read " Dear Sponsor, Thank you so much for contributing your time and money to help make my senior year special.  I loved opening all of my gifts!  It really meant a lot!" and was signed with her name.

And on a bit more personal level, these are part of the words from one of the seniors directly to her sponsor in the card she dropped off for them .  In part, she wrote,"Thank you so much for everything.  I was having a rough year ... you made me feel like somebody cared for me.  So this really meant a lot to me!  I will never forget how you made me feel."   We can't help but believe that many of the seniors have the same sentiments.

So in closing, Thank You.

Thank you for answering the call, filling out that google form and signing up to be a part of this endeavor.

Thank you for spending your time and money in encouraging and supporting a young person getting to the finish line of such an important life step during the most trying of years.

Thank you for the kindness of your heart and the generosity of your character.  It is our belief that someday, somehow, someway your examples will be passed forward by them.

And finally, thank you for making such a difference for all of them.

Sincerely,
Kevin Marushack
Shane Thornton
Program Coordinators

. . . and thanks for listening once again!
