Echoes from Cañon
Our Mission and Core Beliefs
The Cañon City School District is future-focused, providing innovative educational opportunities to successfully prepare all students to meet any challenge they may face.
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action

Last week the Cañon City School District began an extensive summer education program, serving roughly twice the number of students we do in a typical year.
We have two primary goals this summer: The first is to offer high quality reading and math interventions to support students catching up on missed learning opportunities due to a year and a quarter of COVID disruption. The second is to simply offer students outlets to reengage in school and have fun learning. To this end, we are offering a robust summer enrichment program and special education extended school year services. Our 2021 summer program will last five weeks this year, ending the last week of July.
Keeping our first core belief in mind, putting Maslow before Bloom, the Cañon City School District has once again committed to hosting a Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM) Dental Clinic. This year free dental services will be offered on Friday September 24th and Saturday September 25th at Harrison School. We anticipate more than $1 million in dental care services to be provided at no cost, and to make this event possible we have committed to holding no school on Thursday September 23rd, so the clinic can be set up, as well as Friday the 24th when services will be provide. To learn more about this event you can go to https://comom.org
Speaking of putting Maslow before Bloom. Are you a student or staff member of Cañon City Schools? We just want to offer a reminder that The Pulse, our School Based Health Center is open for services even during the summer. You can schedule and treat physical and mental health conditions though this facility. You can find more information at https://vwhs.org/valley.../pulse-school-based-health-center/

Our Future Focus

As summer is now in full swing, the primary goal of the district administration is to fill all open positions with high quality people to work with our children. This is no small task right now as many employers are struggling to to fill their openings.
Along these lines, the Cañon City Schools Nutrition Services is looking for a few quality individuals to join their team for the upcoming school year. Please go to this link to apply for these and other open positions: https://www.applitrack.com/canon/onlineapp/default.aspx?Category=Food%20Service&fbclid=IwAR0BQpMNtPkj6548nOHBuM0nMfqxYbFbD408PjXtdZdDHGbUlNEh5DU1Lco
Another area of focus has been continuing our work to establish a Cañon City-Fremont RE-1, Florence-Penrose-Fremont RE-2, and Cotopaxi Fremont RE-3 school district regional collaborative. The goal is to ensure all Fremont County high school students have equitable opportunities to participate in career pathways instruction, no matter which brick and mortar school they attend. We've been working toward this effort for nearly 18 months now and our three county districts and our higher education partner, Pueblo Community College, have done some amazing work to attract investments in our concept. To this end we have already secured funding through the Gates Family Foundation and the Bekins Foundation, and are now actively pursuing grant awards through the USDA, federal congressional earmarking opportunities, the Catalyze Challenge, and the SyncUp Award.

Applying Our Traits and Skills

If we are nothing, we are tenacious. Through incessant tenacity, the Cañon City School District that added many attractive employee benefits in its effort to attract and retain high quality staff. One of our new ways of doing so is by offering high quality preschool services at a reduced cost for employees with children. Thus, I wish to share this information one more time:
