Echoes from Cañon
Our Mission
The Cañon City School District is future-focused, providing innovative educational opportunities to successfully prepare all students to meet any challenge they may face.

Our Core Beliefs
1. We meet the social-emotional needs of all students, putting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs before Bloom’s Taxonomy.
2. We believe learning growth matters most, requires risk-taking, and the work we do in our schools has the greatest impact on this.
3. We’re future-focused, believing the development of certain traits and skills will best prepare our students for ever-changing careers.
4. We emphasize what is good for kids over the needs and comfort of adults.

Our Core Beliefs in Action
Organizing the distribution of yard signs for 230 graduates was a big task!
To kick off what would have been Cañon City High School graduation week, the Cañon City High School staff planted yard signs at the front of the school, to be distributed to all graduating seniors. They were picked up as students checked out. The week culminated with a student-organized/local first-responder supported parade over Skyline Drive and through Main street. Please don't forget our plan is still to hold an in-person graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 30th.
During the last week of school, Isaiah Wood, a Harrison student was awarded a free Pizza Dinner for outstanding work while learning from home. Instead of using his reward, he decided to share it with someone less fortunate. I understand this student and his siblings gathered up $7 in loose change to distribute as well. What a great act of civility!
In the past two weeks, Director of Student Support Services Paula Buser and Health, District Nurse Patricia Sallie, and Wellness coordinator Brian VanIwarden took our School-Based Health Center the steering committee on a group tour of the new School-Based Health Center facility. Solvista and Valleywide Healthcare employees were present. Completion of the facility is expected in several weeks. The opening of the facility is scheduled for August 17th.

Our Future Focus
Please be aware this year's Gifted and Talented Education SPLASh! program has been canceled. With it typically scheduled for early June, we simply could not pull it together in a safe fashion, especially with current gathering restrictions.
Our greatest task right now is planning for the physical opening of our facilities this fall, in whatever manner allowed. Though there are many details to work out, our basic plan is as follows:
Plan A: We’ll conduct school as normal with very few limits to attendance, though possibly with precautions in place such as monitoring health conditions and requiring personal protective equipment such as facemasks.
Plan B: We’ll operate a hybrid attendance schedule to meet the requirements of gathering size, accomplish social distancing, and provide personal health protection to all participants.
Plan C: Our buildings will be closed and instruction will be delivered to all students through digital means.
We already know how to implement Plan A and Plan C. The focus of our work this summer will be on how to implement Plan B if need be.

Override and Bond Progress
The Board of Education inspected the new Tiger Dome floor, and the 1925 Cañon City Middle School remodel project.
On Thursday, May 21st I had the opportunity to physically tour construction work at Cañon City Middle School, Washington Elementary, and in Cañon City High School at the Tiger Dome and in the Advanced manufacturing Lab. At CCMS we were amazed to see the 3rd floor of the 1925 structure completely gutted in preparation for its upcoming remodel. At the same time work had already begun on asbestos abatement on the 2nd-floor and in the basement. Good progress is being made in Washington Elementary with classroom walls being painted and even some flooring starting to be installed. The Tiger Dome floor was completely installed when we visited, awaiting sanding and lining before our new bleachers get installed.
They also explored the new Washington facility, and new construction at Cañon City Middle School.
The Past Few Weeks
In the past two weeks, I supported schools in wrapping up the 2019-20 school year, participated in director meetings, toured our construction projects, worked on policy revisions, participated in various legislative advocacy efforts, began outlining a plan for opening our schools in August, attended a Fremont Economic Development Corporation board meeting, and addressed to a lot of correspondence.
The Coming Weeks
In the next two weeks, I'll meet with building leaders to continue planning to reopen our schools, participate in director meetings, attend Rural Alliance, Opportunity Coalition, and Pikes Peak Alliance legislative advocacy meetings, hold an Administrative Office Staff meeting, attend a CDE Charter School Authorizer meeting, attend a school board work session and meeting, and participate in a number of Colorado Education Initiative Accelerated Design Network sessions.
